Letter to Parents

Dear Parents,

You have been there. Every student has been there. Being punished for not getting the highest marks. Not spending enough time with the books. Not being the BEST in the class. But who exactly defines the definition of “BEST”? Well, in India- it’s the parents. And it’s definitely not their fault. They have also encountered the same situation. Their parents did the same with them, and now they are doing it with their next generation.

The exams of children will soon start. We know you all are worried and want your child to score high but please do remember, amongst all the students who will give the exams are a writer or a guitarist or a football player and they may not always understand Physics.

Let “Sharma Ji ki beti/beta” excel in whatever they do. But, don’t call your child a loser because he failed to score a little more marks in English. There’s a budding entrepreneur who simply don’t have any idea about literature or not interested in Indian History. There’s a singer who loves poetry and hate Chemistry. There’s a sportsperson whose physical fitness is more important than Physics. If your child scores high then a big congratulation. But if he or she fails or don’t score much then don’t take away their self-confidence from them.

By writing this letter we don’t discourage the concept of exams or we are not casual about the scenario but we just want you to evaluate and understand that marks are important but they won’t define your child’s future. We understand your dreams and expectations from your child which is perfectly okay. But you should first make them believe that you want them to live a happy and healthy life, be good and then excel in studies. You should always encourage them. Tell them it’s okay, it’s just an exam. They have to deal with bigger things in life. Tell them, no matter how much they score you love them and won’t judge them. Sit with your child and release their stress and worries so that they feel special. Make them believe that they can do wonders.

Please do this and if you do, your children conquer the world. One exam or a 90 percent won’t take away their dreams and talent. Remember what VIR DAS said, “Great minds and great personalities don’t always have great mark sheets. All you need for a great life is the first two”.

Sincerely,
ANKUR ANAND
